Can You Identify a Scam?
There has been a recent spike in garage door scams and fake scam garage door installation companies. As a homeowner, could you spot the difference between garage door scammers and a legit company with garage door repair professionals? Well, we at RCS Carolina want our customers to know what to look for in a real garage door service company and how to spot garage door repair scams.
In most cases, people generally don’t have a go-to garage door repair company and when their garage door system breaks, the internet is the answer. Unfortunately, the internet can be both helpful and harmful to finding garage door repair and installation services.
Watch the video below to learn some tips on how to detect a scam garage door company and avoid identity theft, fraudulent repair service, and any other problems.
4 Most Common Garage Door Repairs That Result in Scams
Some of the most common repairs you may need that result in scams are typically repairs you can do yourself. Be sure to do your research and try to troubleshoot the issue before calling a dealer.
Problem: Malfunctioning Photo-Eye
Probable Cause: Eye has been bumped out of alignment or debris is in front of eye
Solution: Realign photo eyes with one another. Also, remove all debris from in front of and around the eye. Try closing your garage door again.
Problem: Broken Spring – The garage door is not opening completely
Probable Cause: Torsion springs typically have a life cycle of 10,000 opens and closes. Overuse results in a broken spring.
Detection: While inside the garage, look above the closed door where the torsion springs are located. If a spring is broken, it will be visible/obvious.
Solution: If you have 2 springs, it is highly recommended to replace both springs at the same time.
Problem: Malfunctioning Remote Control
Solution: Replace the batteries; check photo-eyes to see if they are obstructed or out of alignment
Note: A new opener is not generally needed unless the current opener is over 10 years old
Problem: Noisy Garage Door
Solution: Apply manufacturer-approved lubricant to the hinges, rollers and springs
Note: If that does not work, contact a professional for a proper diagnosis.
